Freya Maia is an artist based in the west of Ireland.
Her early works were a response to a series of extraordinary mystical experiences that began at University in 1988. In 2005 she experienced 'The Event', the sudden loss of all sense of personal identity along with all creative impulse and ability. Explanations for the cause of this loss meander between the physical (undiagnosed Lyme Disease), the psychological (trauma induced dissociation) and the sacred (Divine Intervention). Whatever the cause of 'The Event' it opened her to an accelerated experience of profound mythologically embedded synchronicities. Returning to artistic practice in 2025 her work continues the autobiographical exploration of these mystical experiences and their entwinement with the myriad collective beliefs around Consciousness and the nature of reality.
